6 tips for puppy training
A puppy will start to learn as soon as they arrive home with you, and they will continue to learn all the time so they need to learn puppy obedience!
Puppies, very like children, need constant watching and training – this need not be an ordeal, teaching puppy obedience just needs you to follow a few rules.
1. Make a schedule for your puppy as this will help him to settle down with you more quickly. This should include frequent visits to the desired spot you wish him to use to pass water and stools, set times for meals, set times to sleep, lots of play times, times for puppy training, etc. A bored puppy will get into mischief, so keep him busy!
2. Puppy obedience involves teaching your pup to respect you as the pack leader – it’s instinctive for a dog to follow as they naturally live in packs. Once you have established yourself as his pack leader then you will find your puppy training much easier.
3. When teaching your puppy obedience, you should only use positive methods. Don’t shout at him, or punish him when he does something wrong. This is not only cruel but can lead to behavioral problems later.
4. Use treats as a reward – when your puppy does well you reward him. He will soon learn to behave in the way you want him to.
5. For puppy obedience at its best, your puppy must understand the word “no”. Praise good behavior and walk away from bad. Your puppy will soon learn that if he is naughty we will not have you as a playmate for a while.
6. Puppies live for the moment. You need to catch him misbehaving for it to have any effect at all. If you see in doing something he should not be doing then startle him by making a nose such as rattling a tin of pebbles. Then make him correct his behavior and once he has done this you can offer him a treat and praise him. Scolding after the event will simply not work.
